Most people describe it the same way. The earbuds sound flat. The bass has gone soft. Vocals sit further back than they used to. Nothing is broken exactly, but the energy is missing, and it feels like the product is wearing out.
That conclusion is almost always wrong, and the real cause is unglamorous: ear wax on the mesh.
What that little mesh actually does
Look closely at the nozzle of an in-ear earbud — the part that goes into your ear canal — and you will see a fine mesh or grille covering the opening. It exists to keep debris away from the driver, which is the small speaker inside doing the actual work.
That mesh is doing its job. Every hour you wear the earbuds, it sits inside a warm ear canal that produces cerumen, better known as ear wax. This is completely normal biology, not a hygiene failure. Some people produce more than others, and warm humid weather does not help.
Over weeks and months, wax accumulates on and inside that mesh. Sound now has to travel through a partially blocked opening.
Why it sounds specifically like lost bass
This is the part that misleads people.
Blocking the nozzle does not mute everything evenly. It changes the acoustic behaviour of the whole system — the sealed volume between the driver and your eardrum. Bass response in an in-ear earbud depends heavily on that seal and that air path being intact. Restrict it, and low frequencies lose their punch first and most noticeably. High frequencies get dulled too, which is why the overall impression is "muffled" rather than just "quieter".
So you get an outcome that feels exactly like a driver wearing out or a cheap product degrading. It is neither. It is a physical obstruction, and it is reversible.
There is a useful giveaway: **if one side sounds noticeably worse than the other, it is almost certainly wax.** Ears rarely produce cerumen at identical rates, so the blockage builds asymmetrically. Drivers do not spontaneously degrade one side at a time on the same pair.
Cleaning it without wrecking the driver
The direction you clean matters more than the tool.
Take a soft dry brush — a clean, dry toothbrush is fine, and many earbuds ship with a small cleaning brush that most people never open. Hold the earbud with the nozzle pointing downward, so gravity is working with you rather than against you.
Brush across and outward, away from the opening. You are lifting wax off the mesh and letting it fall away. Never push inward.
For stubborn build-up, a small amount of dry, gentle blotting with the corner of a microfibre cloth can help. Then brush again.
Do this every two to four weeks if you wear them daily. It takes under a minute and it prevents the slow decline entirely.
What not to do
- Never poke inward with anything. Pins, toothpicks, paperclips, safety pins. The mesh is fragile and the driver behind it is fragile. Pushing wax through the mesh, or puncturing the mesh, converts a cleanable problem into a permanent one.
- Never point compressed air straight into the nozzle. The pressure can damage the driver diaphragm. If you use air at all, use it at an angle, from a distance, and briefly.
- Do not use water, alcohol, or cleaning fluid on the mesh. Liquid carries the wax inward instead of away, and takes a long time to dry out of that cavity.
- Do not use adhesive tape. It occasionally lifts the mesh itself.
A quick before-and-after test
If you want to confirm the diagnosis rather than take our word for it, do this:
Play a bass-heavy track you know well. Listen to each earbud individually, one at a time, with the other one out. Note which side sounds weaker.
Clean both. Play the same track again, the same way.
Most people hear the difference immediately, and are slightly annoyed at how long they put up with it.
When it genuinely is not wax
There are cases where cleaning changes nothing, and those are worth naming honestly.
If both sides sound identically thin, and the problem appeared abruptly rather than gradually, check your ear tip fit first — the wrong tip size destroys bass response just as effectively as a blocked mesh, and we will cover that properly in a separate article. Also check whether an EQ setting in your phone or companion app got changed.
If audio is distorting, crackling, or cutting out rather than simply sounding dull, that is a different failure mode and not a cleaning issue.
But for the slow, gradual, "it just doesn't sound as good as it used to" complaint — nine times out of ten, it is wax, and a soft brush fixes it.
