Here is a situation we hear about constantly. Someone drops their earbuds into the case at the end of the day, same as always. Next morning, one side is dead. Or both. The case still has charge. The buds were fine yesterday. Nothing was dropped, nothing got wet.

The usual conclusion is that the battery has failed, and the usual next step is to start shopping for a replacement pair.

In a lot of cases, that is the wrong diagnosis — and an expensive one.

Malaysia is quietly hostile to small electrical contacts

Relative humidity here sits somewhere in the 70–90% band for most of the year. We are so used to it that it barely registers as a condition. But electrical contacts notice.

Your earbuds charge through metal contact points — usually two small pins on each bud that meet matching pads inside the case. That connection is tiny, exposed, and made of metal. In persistently damp air, a very thin oxide layer forms on that metal over weeks and months. It is often invisible. You will not see green corrosion or rust. The pins look completely normal.

But that layer is enough to interrupt a low-voltage connection. The bud sits in the case looking perfectly seated, and no meaningful current crosses.

This is why the failure so often feels sudden. The oxidation builds gradually, the connection gets progressively worse, and then one night it crosses the threshold where charging simply stops. From your side, it looks like the battery died overnight.

Sweat accelerates it, which is why gym users and motorbike commuters tend to hit this earlier than most. So does storing the case in a bag that goes from an air-conditioned office to a hot car park and back again, twice a day, every day.

How to tell the difference before you spend money

There are a few tells that separate a contact problem from a genuine battery failure.

Watch the case LED when you seat the bud. A healthy connection usually produces an immediate, steady indicator response. With oxidised pins, you will often get nothing at all, or a flicker that comes and goes if you press the bud down or nudge it slightly.

Try the wiggle test. Seat the bud, then apply gentle pressure or rotate it a few degrees. If the charging indicator suddenly springs to life, that is a contact issue, full stop. A dead battery does not care how you hold it.

Check whether it is one side or both. A single dead bud is far more likely to be contact-related than a coordinated failure of two independent battery cells on the same night.

Ask whether it holds charge or never takes one. If the bud charges to full and then drains unusually fast, that points to battery degradation. If it never registers as charging at all, look at the pins first.

The fix takes about thirty seconds

You need one of two things: a dry cotton bud, or a clean pencil eraser.

For the pins on the earbuds themselves, wipe firmly with the dry cotton bud. For the contact pads inside the case, a pencil eraser works better — the mild abrasion lifts the oxide layer without scratching the plating. Rub gently, then blow out the eraser dust or tip the case upside down and tap it.

Then seat the bud again and check for the charging indicator.

A few things not to do, because we have seen all of them go badly:

  • No liquids. Not water, not alcohol, not contact cleaner sprayed into the case well. The case well is not a sealed compartment, and liquid that gets past the pads has nowhere good to go.
  • No metal. No needles, no tweezers, no penknife tip. The plating on those pads is extremely thin, and once you scratch through it, corrosion accelerates rather than stops.
  • No compressed air blasted directly into the well. It can drive dust and moisture deeper into the housing instead of clearing it.

Preventing it from coming back

Once you have restored the connection, keeping it clean is mostly about managing moisture and doing very little, very occasionally.

Drop a silica gel sachet into whatever pouch or bag pocket the case lives in. You already have a supply — they come in shoe boxes, bags, and half the electronics you buy. Replace it every few months. It costs nothing and it meaningfully lowers the humidity in that small enclosed space.

Wipe the pins with a dry cloth or cotton bud roughly once a month. If you ride a motorbike, train regularly, or live close to the coast where salt is in the air, make it fortnightly.

Let the buds air off before closing the case after a workout. Trapping warm, damp buds in a sealed case is close to a worst-case scenario for the contacts. Sixty seconds on the table first makes a real difference.

Keep the case out of parked cars. A dashboard in Malaysian afternoon sun is a genuinely punishing environment, and heat cycling is hard on both the battery and the contacts.

When it really is the battery

To be fair to the batteries: sometimes they do fail.

If you have cleaned the pins properly, the charging indicator responds normally, the bud charges to full — and then runs for twenty minutes when it used to run for five hours, that is battery degradation. Lithium cells in true wireless earbuds are very small, and after two to three years of daily cycling, reduced capacity is expected behaviour rather than a defect.

But it is worth ruling out the thirty-second fix first. We would rather you kept a working pair than replaced a healthy one.
