Switch on active noise cancellation for the first time and a lot of people report the same odd sensation. A fullness. A slight suction. Something similar to a plane descending, or being a metre underwater.

Some people find it mildly strange and forget about it within a minute. Others find it unpleasant enough to turn ANC off permanently, or to return the product assuming something is defective.

Almost nobody gets a straight explanation of what is actually happening. So here it is — and it is genuinely two separate things that get lumped together.

First, the myth worth killing

**Active noise cancellation does not change the air pressure inside your ear canal.**

It cannot. There is no pump, no vacuum, no seal being tightened. ANC works entirely in sound: tiny external microphones sample the ambient noise around you, the earbud generates an inverted version of that waveform, and the two largely cancel each other out before they reach your eardrum.

That process removes sound. It does not move air in any way your ear can detect as pressure.

So if you have been quietly worried that ANC is doing something physical to your ears, it is not. Whatever you are feeling has a different explanation.

Cause one: your brain lost its reference points

This is the big one, and it is more interesting than it sounds.

ANC is most effective at low frequencies — engine drone, air-conditioning hum, road noise, the general rumble of a building. High-pitched sounds like voices and alarms are much harder to cancel, which is why ANC flattens the background but does not silence a conversation.

Your brain uses exactly that low-frequency background as a constant, unconscious reference for the space around you. It is part of how you sense that you are indoors, outdoors, in a big room, in a car.

Press the ANC button and that entire reference layer disappears in under a second. Nothing physical changed. But your brain has just lost a stream of information it relies on, and it interprets that sudden absence using the closest experience it has: the pressure changes you feel when altitude or depth changes.

So it reports pressure. There is no pressure. It is a sensory mismatch, and it is harmless.

This is also why the effect is so wildly inconsistent between people. Auditory processing varies. Some people adapt in seconds; others are simply more sensitive to the abrupt removal of low-frequency sound and feel it every time.

Cause two: the occlusion effect (this one is physical)

The second cause is real, physical, and specific to in-ear earbuds rather than over-ear headphones.

When a silicone ear tip seals your ear canal, it creates a small closed pocket of air between the tip and your eardrum. That pocket is genuinely sealed. Movement then changes the pressure inside it: your jaw moving when you chew or talk, the earbud shifting slightly as you walk, even the driver's own excursion.

This is called the occlusion effect, and it produces a characteristic set of symptoms:

  • Your own voice sounds boomy, loud, and "inside your head"
  • Chewing sounds are amplified dramatically
  • Walking produces a soft thumping in time with your steps
  • A general stuffed-up, blocked feeling

Crucially, this happens with any well-sealed in-ear earbud, ANC or not. People just tend to notice it more with ANC on, because everything else has gone quiet.

How to tell which one you have

This is easy to self-diagnose.

Talk out loud, or chew something. If the sensation changes, intensifies, or your own voice sounds boomy and strange, you are dealing with the occlusion effect from the seal.

Now sit still and stay quiet with ANC on. If the fullness is there constantly regardless of what your jaw is doing, it is the brain-based effect.

Plenty of people have both at once, which is why the sensation can feel so hard to describe.

What actually helps

Give it ten to fifteen minutes. For the brain-based version, adaptation is real and usually fast. Most people who push through the first session stop noticing it entirely. If you are trying ANC for the first time, do not judge it in the first two minutes.

Turn ANC strength down if your earbuds allow it. Adjustable ANC levels are increasingly common in companion apps. Aggressive cancellation is not automatically better — it just cancels more low-frequency information, which is precisely the thing triggering the sensation. Find the lowest setting that handles the noise you actually care about.

Change your ear tip size. This is the single most effective fix for the occlusion side. A tip that is too large creates an unnecessarily tight, deep seal. Most people default to the medium tips that came pre-fitted and never experiment. Try the small size — many find it more comfortable with no loss in noise isolation.

Insert them less deeply. A shallower fit reduces occlusion. You lose a bit of isolation, and for many people that is a fair trade.

Alternate with transparency mode. On a long flight or a full working day, switching between ANC and transparency every hour or so gives your auditory system periodic reference points back. Many heavy users land on this naturally.

Consider over-ear instead of in-ear. If occlusion is your main issue, over-ear headphones sit around the ear rather than sealing the canal, which sidesteps that mechanism entirely.

When to stop pushing

One caveat worth stating plainly. If ANC gives you actual pain, headaches, dizziness or nausea rather than mild strangeness, do not try to tough it out. Some people simply do not tolerate it, and there is no benefit in forcing it. Sound-isolating earbuds without ANC, or over-ear headphones, will get you most of the quiet without the trigger.

And if you are getting ear pain, discomfort or hearing changes that persist after you take the earbuds out, that is worth raising with a doctor — that is beyond anything a settings change should be solving.
